Australia had three Prime Ministers during the period of time in question. Malcolm Fraser was Prime Minister from 11 November 1975 - 11 March 1983. Bob Hawkes was Prime Minister from 11 March 1983 - 20 December 1991. Paul Keating was Prime Minister from 20 December 1991 - 11 March 1996.
James K. Polk belonged to the political party of Democrats. He was the 11th elected president of the United States.

James Buchanan was a Jacksononian Democrat; John Fremont was the first Republican candidate for President.
Prime Minister of Australia, Robert "Bob" Hawke went to the University of Oxford, joined the Labor Party and graduated with a degree in letters, like a political science and communications degree of today. He went on to be a political leader in Australia. I have added a related link for you below.
The Labor government of Bob Hawke was elected in 1983. Bob Hawke was the leader of the Labor party, so he thus became Prime Minister. The Leader of the Labor Party in Parliament is elected by all of the Labor Party MP's and Senators, meeting together as a group. This is called the Caucus. The Prime Minister of Australia is chosen by the Governor-General, who normally appoints the leader of the party that has the support of a majority of MP's in the House of Representatives. When the Labor Party won a majority of seats in the 1983 elections, that meant that Bob Hawke, as leader of the Labor Party, was appointed as Prime Minister. Keating and Hawke agreed that Keating should become Prime Minister after Hawke stepped down. Hawke agreed to step down as leader after the 1990 elections. This was the so-called "Kirribilli agreement", made at Kirribilli House in Sydney. In 1991, Bob Hawke announced that he would not fulfill his agreement and intended to remain as Leader of the Labor Party and not step down in favour of Keating. Keating then launched a challenge to his position as Leader of the Labor Party. The Labor Caucus held a vote. Keating lost the first vote, but the second time around succeded in winning the support of a majority in the Caucus. Because Keating was now the leader of the Labor Party, and the Labor Party had a majority in Parliament, this meant that Keating was automatically appointed Prime Minister.
