Depending on where you are on Sumatra, you may encounter the Strait of Malacca (between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, the Karimata Straight in the Java Sea (between Sumatra and Borneo), and the Gulf of Thailand, which would have to be sailed through if one wanted to land in Thailand. Alternatively, the Andaman Sea, north of the tip of Sumatra, could be used to get to Myanmar, which borders Thailand.
