The Waldorf salad, which was reportedly created by Oscar Tschirky, the maitre d'hotel at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue. A traditional Waldorf salad consists of carrots, celery, walnuts, diced apples and grapes, in a mayonnaise dressing, served over a bed of lettuce.

Some recipes use raisins or other dried fruit, instead of grapes, and other nuts instead of (or in addition to) walnuts, and a yogurt dressing is sometimes used instead of mayonnaise. Some recipes add chicken or turkey as well.
