HIV and AIDS, frequently complicated by drug resistant tuberculosis. Malnutrition in times of drought, hydatid and parasitic illnesses, brucellosis, bilharzia, rickettsial illnesses etc. These problems are especially difficult for a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. Complicating things still further is that medical treatment is not free, and those who most need it are least likely to be able to afford it. Also, the country is huge and transport is a problem, so people who are ill in remote areas often do not see a doctor until it is too late for treatment. Several different churches are doing very good medical work there, but they seldom have much money to buy supplies, which limits what they are able to do.
