The mules are actually towing locomotives and are used to guide ships and keep them in the correct position in the locks, avoiding collisions and damage to the ship or the lock structure.
The Panama Canal and the Suez Canal are both vital waterways for global trade, but they serve different regions and have different traffic patterns. The Suez Canal typically sees more traffic in terms of vessel numbers and tonnage, as it connects Europe to Asia and is a key route for oil and goods. In contrast, the Panama Canal is crucial for shipping between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans but handles fewer vessels overall due to its capacity limitations. Overall, the Suez Canal is generally considered busier than the Panama Canal.
America collaborated with the independance struggle of Panama in order that America would be in a position to build the Panama Canal. America needed an inter-ocean canal in order to serve both western and eastern seaboards without ships having to go around South America, thousands of miles extra.
Panama is in central American, and it is where the canal is found. The Panama Canal is a very significant canal, as it allows ships direct passage between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic. This saves them trying to travel around South America, which would be a huge and dangerous journey. The Panama Canal is man-made and an incredible piece of engineering. Locks

The towpath of a canal is significant because it provides a safe and accessible route for transporting goods and navigating the waterway without hindrance. Historically, towpaths were used by horses and mules to pull barges, facilitating trade and commerce. Today, they serve recreational purposes, such as walking, cycling, and nature observation, enhancing community engagement with natural landscapes. Additionally, well-maintained towpaths contribute to the preservation of the canal's historical and ecological value.

The Hay-Banau-Varilla treaty was the treaty which allowed for United States control over the area on which the Panama Canal was to be contructed. The circumstances of the treaty itself serve as a perfect example of Theodore Roosevelt's "Big Stick" or "Gunboat" diplomacy. Upon failure of the Hay-Pauncefote treaty with Columbia who, at the time, controlled the area of Panama, Roosevelt sent in US troops to prevent movement of Columbian fighters into Panama. Soon thereafter, Roosevelt recognized Panama as an independent country and began the dealings for the canal. The terms of the treaty were for a 10 mile wide canal building zone in return for a down payment of 10 million dollars and $250,000 per year to begin on the 9th anniversary of the treaty's ratification. Said Roosevelt in response to the criticism of his hasty actions, "I took Panama and let Congress debate it later." In the long run, the Panama Canal obviously helped not only trade but also military as the need demonstrated in the situtation in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.
