"Tinsel town" seems to be an old term for "the big city" generally. It goes back to the early 20th century and perhaps beyond, although I can't find anything earlier than 1916. Even after World War II it was still being applied to New York as well as Hollywood/Los Angeles, although now it's almost exclusively the latter. Tinsel Town is another name for Hollywood.
