The thing is: he did not personally have any superpowers. When he was sent to kill Medusa, he borrowed a shield and sword from Athena, winged sandals from Hermes, invisibility hat from Hades. Having killed Medusa, he put her head in a bag. He could then produce this head and direct her gaze (althgough dead) towards anybody, and they were turned to stone.
