The area that is now Virginia was part of the Province of Virginia at the time the United States gained independence from Great Britain.

After becoming a constitutional state of the U.S. in June 1788, Virginia was subdivided three times:

  • In September 1791 between 30 and 40 square miles was given or sold to the federal government to become part of the District of Columbia.
  • In June 1792 the western counties of Virginia became the state of Kentucky.
  • In July 1846, Virginia retook possession of the part of the District of Columbia that was originally part of Virginia.
  • In June 1863, a large part of Virginia became the state of West Virginia.
