It was the famous Jumbo - he was born in 1861 in an area in today's Eritrea (not quite Ethiopia), which was a French colony at that time and brought to a Paris zoo. He was transferred to London Zoo in 1865 and was a world famous and incredibly popular attraction. He would daily take children for rides on his back around the zoo. He was sold again in 1882 to P.T.Barnum, the owner of "The Greatest Show on Earth" for the huge sum of $10,000. When Barnum offered to buy Jumbo, 100,000 school children wrote to Queen Victoria begging her not to let him be sold and leave British shores! But he left and went to New York were Barnum started his summer circus tour each year. I think this must be the elephant you are looking for!
