This is known as a tsunami.
Because the daily changing answer is beyond the scope my spare time, I recommend you the related question + answer: What are the best news sources for Japan 2011 and beyond(?)! -- Plus, there was an earthquake, there was a tsunami, a nuclear explosion, a volcano erupted and there was a mini fire.
Well, earthquakes do cause tsunamis. But only underwater earthquakes. Plus, they have to be a transform plate boundary earthquake(caused by subduction).Any displacement of water will cause a tsunami. In short, some underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis.
Actually, the largest recorded earthquake goes to Chile in 1960 with a 9.5 magnitude earthquake.
The moment magnitude uses seismographs plus what physically occurs during an earthquake.

Tetris Plus happened in 1990.
think about, physics say there has to be an end to them..... there's forces like friction, wind resistance, gravity, tidal action.....all acting against a tsunami. plus, if they hit land, of course theyll have to stop.
I dont know ask someone cleverer than me. Maybe it effects it by moving it. it actually causes the surrounding buildings to fall or damage and every thing else will usually fall to pieces and be gone basically. please feel free to correct me in any way. oh and also the ground might crack too.
