When you first got your garden shed from the home improvement center, it looked great. You set it near the back of your property and proceeded to transfer the tools you were storing in the garage into their new home. Finally, you had all of your gardening implements, the lawnmower and the wheelbarrow, together, in one place. Your garden shed would make it easy to find the shovel or rake and also allow you to once again park your car in the garage.

Well, after just a few months, your garden shed has become a disorganized mess. It seems that everything that has no other good place to go has wound up in the shed. Winter blankets in large trash bags, the kids old toys, a broken ceiling fan and much more have cluttered up your once pristine storage space. It is time to clean up and organize your garden shed.

Start by removing everything that does not belong in the shed. This can take awhile as it is amazing how much stuff you could actually fit in that eight by eight space. If it is not used in the garden or to maintain your yard, out it goes. Now that you’ve cleared out all the peripheral matter, it is time to evaluate your inventory.

Large items like a lawn mower, wheel barrow or pull cart need a nice space on the floor. Rakes, shovels, hoes and other long handled tools, can be nicely organized by purchasing a rack specially designed to hold those tools. For about $20, you can buy a durable plastic tool rack, that has different sized slots where the tools fit and stay in place.

Install a peg board on one wall of your garden shed and get a series of easy to adjust hooks and holders. Place your small garden tools like a spade or trowel neatly on the board. You can also build some shelves or buy a ready made steel shelving unit, where you can store fertilizer, bags of seed, a chainsaw and any other number of items that should not just be thrown on the floor. With a little effort, your garden shed will be organized and you’ll be able to find what you need.
