New York was originally a Dutch colony, New Netherlands. The British seized it (and its capital New Amsterdam) from the Dutch in 1664, and kept it despite the loss by Britain of the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667).

The city and colony were renamed New York after James, Duke of York and Duke of Albany, who became king as James II in 1685.
