What type of houses do people live in the north of Spain?

Spain's housing is plentiful and mainly brick and/or masonry. It ranges from centuries old buildings and neighborhoods to ultramodern condominiums and apartment buildings and the occasional single family house with a yard. Most of the houses have patios which are paved. Most of the houses have common walls with adjacent buildings and border on a sidewalk in front which, in turn extends all the way to the street (no grass).

Of course it depends on the whereabouts of the houses. However, most people in urban Spain people live in apartments, due to the demand for housing at lower costs. Rural dwellings were individual houses but now most rural workers live in town and commute to the farm. There are a few modern individual houses on the outskirts of the cities but they are far from the norm in that both the land and the structure are too expensive. Individual houses built recently in subdivisions called "Urbanizaciones" share a common wall with the houses on either side, sometimes have a very small front patio, and or an interior patio, but not both. The rear of the houses share a common wall with the rear of houses facing in the other direction on the next street.

Housing is masonry and very little has central heat. However the use of heat pumps that feed up to 5 individual heating/cooling units is becoming more and more common. And air conditioning is rather common, especially nearing the South and Madrid as it gets even warmer in the Summer.

Most wood must be imported to Spain and very little is used for trim. Closets are not the norm armoires are used instead.

Electric service, outlets and lights, are 250VAC, 50 HZ, the materials are very poor don't last well, and there are not as many as the US.

Water is standard in all city homes. Demand water heaters have been the norm for 40 years. The water heaters are fired from 25lb. butane (butano) bottles.

Houses are not generally insulated.

Most houses do not have their own private parking and almost every home now has at least one automobile. Parking is a problem.

The north of Spain is very diverse. In most areas, the older houses are made from stone and more modern ones are made of concrete, but there are other building materials, such as wood or brick.
