The terrain in Alice Springs is quite unique. The city sits on a flat plain in the middle of the low, knobbly range known as the Macdonnell Ranges. The contrast between the flatness of Alice Springs and the rounded hills of the ranges is quite stark. The soil in the area is red "bulldust", a fine, powdery soil.

Alice Springs is in central Australia, and thus it is a hot, dry and dusty place in summer. Winters are very cold at night but pleasant during the day. Alice Springs is a uniquely beautiful town, situated in the Macdonnell Ranges, with their rustic, red beauty. It is a modern, well laid out town, and gives one a real view of what Australia is all about. It is filled with laid-back workers from the land as well as modern office workers.

What are the must do things in Alice Springs?

In Alice itself there are quite a few good things to go to, many of which are quite unique and aren't the same as the type of thing you might find in other cities. One of my favourites was the Alice Springs Desert Park, where you get to see lots of the different animals from around the area. The Alice Springs Reptile Park is also quite good, but not as good as the Desert Park. The Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre is quite interesting, and then next door is the old gaol, which also has a museum dedicated to women, mostly pioneers. On Larapinta Drive is the Araluen Cultural Precinct, which has lots of different things within it, including art galleries, a memorial cemetery, an aviation museum and the Museum of Central Australia. There is of course also Ayers Rock, but that is actually over 400km from Alice Springs, and will probably need to be seen on a multi-day trip from Alice.
