James Rutledge was the founder of New Salem, a member of the New Salem Literary Society, and president of the debating club. In 1833, Lincoln made his first attempt at public speaking. James Rutledge was very impressed with Lincoln's speech and recognized his abilities. Shortly thereafter, Rutledge urged Lincoln to run for the Legislature. In 1834, Abraham Lincoln won an election to the Illinois House of Representatives.
