Bosnia was a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, when arch duke Ferdinand visited the country he was assassinated by a group of Serbian separatists calling themselves the black hand. As a result of the arch duke's death Austro-Hungary declared war, this declaration of war dragged numerous countries into the fray via alliances thus starting the first world war.
