Colonial, imperial and monarchical have been the forms that Brazil's government has taken in the past. Specifically, Portugal basically considered Brazil as its colony from its discovery in 1500 until 1882. On September 7, 1822, Brazil declared independence from Portugal and became the Empire of Brazil [Império do Brasil] until November 15, 1889. On that day the monarchy was overthrown, and Brazil became a republic.

Brazil is not a monarchy (nor would there be just one person running the government even if it were). Its government works under a presidential system, with the president being the head of the government (in 2013 the president is Dilma Roussef)
