In the time of the Roman occupation it was known as Hispania. It was later conquered by the Moors and was Initially known as Al-Andaluz. It later fractured into smaller political areas with various names. It was reconquered piecemeal by various Christian Princes over 700 years. When the Moors were finally completely expelled in 1492 it was again one political entity and was known as Espana.
