Zeus was born in Crete, the first child of Cronus (Kronos) and Rhea. Cronus was the leader of the first generation of Titans and was said to have swallowed all his children at birth (to prevent them overthrowing him), with the exception of Zeus who was saved by Rhea. Zeus subsequently overthrew his father and imprisoned him for eternity in Tartarus, the Greek underworld. He then went on to become the ruler of the Olympians, taking Hera (his sister) as his wife. Known as the father of Gods and men, he had many consorts, both mortal and immortal, and fathered many godly and heroic offspring. While generally a good god, he was also known to do bad things, such as throwing Hephaestus (fifth son of Zeus and Hera) off Mount Olympus for being repulsive.
