Internment was introduced by the Heath Government in 1971, known as Operation Demetrius. It was a knee jerk reaction to the escalating security situation, both catholic and protestant communities were targeted. On its introduction ten civilians were killed during arrests or associated operations. Internment resulted in the forced imprisonment without trail by the state. It resulted in the University for Political prisoners. The Labour Government following William Whitelaw's example changed the status of prisoners from political to criminal - despite there not being any legal representation or courts involved. 16th October 1974 the camp, a former second world war RAF base was set alight by the prisoners. Catholic were 100% opposed to internment and fierce rioting swept the country as British soldier arrived to arrest people. The Catholics were generally mistreated during their arrests and so internment was not popular among Northern Irish Catholics. Some people who were interned are still bitter about it to this day.
