NJ was established in 1655, when part of southern NY was split off to form a new colony. Like NY and several other English colonies, NJ at first was a proprietary colony-a colony created by a grant of land from a monarch to an individual or family. In 1702 NJ received a new charter as a royal colony- a colony controlled directly by the English King.
