Ponce de León's final destination was Florida, which he explored in search of the Fountain of Youth and other riches. He made his first landing on the east coast of Florida in 1513, claiming the land for Spain. Unfortunately, he was mortally wounded in a conflict with indigenous peoples during his second expedition to Florida in 1521 and died shortly thereafter in Cuba.
