The Algonquins generally lived in longhouses, a long rectangular building with a frame built of small trees (saplings) that were still flexible and a covering of bark or mats that had been woven from reeds. A few families from a single clan would all live together, with personal space around the outside and living space and cookfires in the center. Hole in the top let in some light and let out the smoke.

Some woodland Algonquins used wigwams instead. These were smaller versions of the longhouse housing only one family and were generally rounder, with a domed top.
