Yes, London, and England for that matter, had firefighters in the 17th century. They rode in horse-drawn fire engines and used pump-operated fire hoses. In fact, the firefighters were actually London's militia, also known as The Watch or The Trained Band. This group of people handled all emergencies from fires, rescues, capturing criminals and defending the country. The firefighters/militia were alerted to fires by church bells ringing in a specific pattern, since phones were not invented yet. These firefighters even fought against the Great Fire of London.
