Catholics were treated unfairly compared to Protestants in Northern Ireland since its' formation in 1921, mainly regarding employment, and certain groups of Catholics sought their civil rights for equality.

A Civil Rights Movement began, inspired by the Million Man March in the USA which sparked unrest from Unionist (loyal to Britain and mainly Protestant) organisations.

This unrest spilled into violence from both Republicans (mainly Catholic) and Unionists during the late 1960's. The British Army then stepped up its' occupation of Northen Ireland by sending in thousands of troops to ease tensions but this action only acted as a catalyst for the "Troubles".
