The Netherlands had colonies in Brazil (New Holland, essentially the entire easternmost lump of South America. They also had Surinam on the north of South America, plus several islands in the Carribean, taken by the Dutch West India Company from the Spanish. The New Amsterdam colony on Manhattan and the Hudson valley was established during the same period. All of these were established for just one reason, to tap the wealth of the Americas and get rich. The Island of Manhattan was chosen as a base because it has an excellent harbor, well protected from storms on the open ocean and with excellent connections inland via the Hudson River. The south end of the island was easily fortified by a wall along what is now Wall Street, protecting it from attack by land, and a few cannons on the Battery sufficed to protect it from attack by sea.
