What was the first US flag called?

The original USA flag was the Continental Colors or Grand Union Flag. It was a British Red Ensign defaced with 6 white stripes, creating a field of 13 red-and-white stripes.

In 1777 the crosses in the canton of the Grand Union Flag were replaced with 13 white stars. The pattern was not prescribed, and nearly all of the period illustrations show different arrangements. This flag has had many nicknames over the years: "Stars and Stripes," "Old Glory," the Star Spangled Banner" to name a few.

The first 13-Star Flag became the Official United States Flag on June14th, 1777 and is the result of the congressional action that took place on that date. It did not have a name.

The name "Old Glory" wasn't used until the 19th Century.
