He decided to issue his Emancipation Proclamation for the urgent reason of keeping the British from helping the Confederates.

Once he had officially turned the war into a crusade against slavery, the British could not intervene without looking pro-slavery. (The British had abolished slavery many years before.)

Lincoln was also hoping that the new crusading aspect of the war would revive Northern morale, after they realised that it was not going to be a short war after all. But it did not have much impact on morale, if the mid-term elections were anything to go by.
