He decided to issue his Emancipation Proclamation for the urgent reason of keeping the British from helping the Confederates.
Once he had officially turned the war into a crusade against slavery, the British could not intervene without looking pro-slavery. (The British had abolished slavery many years before.)
Lincoln was also hoping that the new crusading aspect of the war would revive Northern morale, after they realised that it was not going to be a short war after all. But it did not have much impact on morale, if the mid-term elections were anything to go by.
The main reason that Southerners opposed the election of Abraham Lincoln was his opposition to the expansion of slavery.
Slavery
the main reason was the slavery rights
Lincoln committed himself to reuniting the union at any cost. Although he was elected on the anti-slavery Republican ticket, Lincoln's main reason for going to war was not to stop slavery, but to restore the union. He didn't believe the southerners even had the legal right to secede.

The main ISSUE of the DEBATE was whether slavery be allowed to expand to new territories. The REASON the debates were held was for a seat in the Illinois Senate.
Firstly, I am assuming that you mean assassinated, as opposed to associated. The man that shot him (John Wilkes Booth) was from the South, and was part of a group that did not like his views on slavery. Lincoln and most people from the North wanted to abolish slavery, but most people from the South wanted to keep trading slaves. This was the main reason for the civil war, and the reason that Lincoln was shot. Booth was NOT from the south. He was from Maryland. He was however a confederate sympathizer.
