Trotsky had 4 main impacts.

1. He effectively lead the Petrograd Soviets. He lead strikes, passed on declarations and gave passionate speeches to the proletariats.

In doing so, he demonstrated real confidence in his famous marxist theory of Permanent Revolution, as he believed in the industrial proletariats. He believed it was the proletariats who would eventually carry out the revolution, and he proved right in october 1917.

2. His organisation and role in the october insurrection. Since Lenin was in hiding, it was up to Trotsky to fufill the task of organising and planning for the insurrection. HIs tactical abilities, resulted in little bloodshed, as the bolsheviks effectively and efficiently overthrew the provisional government, by taking out key posts throughout the city.

3. His role in helping the bolsheviks win the civil war. This is again another great siginificance of trotsky as he used his tactical and oratory skills to motivate, inspire, discpline, control and effectively lead the red army to victory. Without him the Red's probably would have lost.

4. the establishment of the fourth international. Since trotsky criticised Stalin's bureacracy and increasing dogmatic influence over the 3rd international or Comintern, Trotsky believed in esablishing a new international to represent the genuine support and belief in his theory of permanent revolution and goal for the widespread of communism. His establishment, quoted by him, "was by far his greatest political achievement".

Trotsky played many roles throughout Russia, but these are the main ones. Hope it helped.
