None. Remember that the colony of New France had been abandoned by France following the 1759 defeat of the Montcalme-led French forces at Quebec by the British forces under Gen. Wolfe. The huge area of the Maritimes and old Quebec were run under British law from London as a colony. Because of unrest in the 13 colonies to the south and fear of revolt the British government were on the horns of a dilemma: how little could they concede the French without incurring hostility from the Puritans. Because of this dilemma, the French were able to retain their freedom of language and religion.
