Aboriginal spears were made of wood from native trees. Different sorts of wood had different purposes, strengths and flexibility, so the type used would vary. The spear tips were made of animal bones or turtle shell, and tied on with human hair for string, or animal hair or hide cut for the purpose.

Fishing spears of the indigenous Australians often involved three or four sharpened wood spikes tied to the end of a long shaft with plant fibre twine, and secured with tree resin. The shaft of the spear could be up to 6m in length, and might be made from the flowering stem of the grass tree, or other long, straight wood.

The wooden prongs were up to 30 cm long, and had extra pieces of bone, shell, teeth or spines such as those found on stingrays attached to help point the spear. When thrown with force into the water, the sharp prongs easily speared a fish, or even more than one.
