The most important tool used by the ancient Israelites was the iron plough. Previous attempts to settle the Canaanite hinterland had been somewhat unsuccessful because the mountainous terrain was too rocky for the bronze ploughs in use until the beginning of the Iron Age. As a result, the Israelites arrived to find a quite sparsely populated region. They were the first settlers able to develop intensive agriculture and gradually foster a substantial population in the mountainous hinterland.
