Most walked the entire way and many lost at least one family member enroute. I have a diary entry from a woman who had 6 children with one born on the trip. Her husband died on the trip, the wagon they had went over a cliff in the Rockies, and the children and her walked to Washington.

Some of the difficulties that they faced were being killed by wild animals, the heat, hostility from the slave trade and un-trustworthy guides.
