Kamehameha set out to kill other ali'i (including his own cousin who helped him gain power over smaller ali'i), in order to rule over all the islands. I doubt anyone alive at the time would have called it 'unification'. The main other ali'i that Kamehameha fought against was Ka'ahumanu (also known as the 'Ahumanu) which was technically a family who ruled over a few islands and were the 'power house' of Hawaiian royalty at the time. The King of the 'Ahumanu however was Kahekili Nui 'Ahumanu, aka King Kahekili.
