It was very lightly populated, due to the harsh terrain north of the Rio Grande and hostile native populations such as Comanches and Apaches. It however, had a sizable population of Neo-Spaniards and then Mexicans, on cities such as Victoria, San Antonio or Laredo. It is estimated that by 1830, the area had a population of about 20,000 inhabitants.
