The Dominican Republic gained independence from Spain in 1921 with the signing for a treaty with no shots fired, however 2 months later Haiti invaded the new independent nation and took over again with no military confrontation since the Dominicans didnt have an army at that time. 23 years later Juan Pablo Duarte jounded the group called " Los Trinitarios" or " The Trinity" and begun the war of independence which ended in 1844 ( Haiti kept invading Dominican republic for 23 more years untill 1867). one of the two most important battles wher the Battle of Tortugero where three Dominican Schooners fired and sunk 4 Haitian Warships without any casualties on the Dominican ships and ever since every Haitian war ship was told to stay away from the dominican side of the island in fear of bein sunk( This was the first and last Naval Battle between Dominican Republic and Haiti which granded Dominicans full control of the sea around the island), . The second battle was he Battle of Beler, was the last major battle of the Dominican War of Independence and was fought on November 27, 1845 at the Beler savanna, Monte Cristi Province. A force of Dominican troops, a portion of the Army of The North, led by General Francisco Antonio Salcedo, defeated a force of the Haitian Army led by General Jean-Louis Pierrot, while 3 Dominican schooners led by Admiral Juan Bautista Cambiaso, blockaded the port of Cap-Haïtien to prevent sea reinforcements of the near sited land battle.
