The gold rush actually spanned several decades, but was spread out over different states. It began with the "official" discovery of gold in New South Wales and Victoria in 1851, and continued through to the Western Australian gold discoveries in the early 1890s.
There was a brief gold rush again with the discovery of gold in the Northern Territory in the 1930s.
