When the Crowns of Castile and Aragon were unified to become the country of Spain and the Age of Discovery began, Spain became a world power. It was very possibly the strongest country during the 16th century and carried on being one of the most powerful countries in the world up until the beginning of the 19th century. Napoleon's invasion of Spain marked the end of its dominance. It lost most of it's American colonies and its economy worsened. It was only until the 1960s that Spain began to recover and its transition to democracy after General Franco's death in 1975 marked a new beginning for Spain in terms of wealth and prosperity.
