The rural urban continuum is the fluctuation in the scale of rurality between major urban settlements. For example between city's it will gradually become more rural before declining in an urban area. To elucidate this could be exemplified anecdotally by a hill phenomena - whereupon there is a trough in rurality in a CBD followed by a gradual incline in levels of rurality as distance from said CBD increases. This reaches an eventual peak in an area of isolated rurality before the scale of rurality (see Cloke's scale of rurality) declines again to a trough in an urban centre.
A large rural-urban shift refers to a significant migration of people from rural areas to urban areas, resulting in a substantial demographic change. This shift can impact infrastructure, services, economy, and social dynamics in both rural and urban areas.
The rural-urban fringe, also known as the outskirts or the urban hinterland, can be described as the "landscape interfacebetween town and country", or also as the transition zone where urban and rural uses mix and often clash. Alternatively, it can be viewed as a landscape type in its own right, one forged from an interaction of urban and rural land uses.
