Fort Knox was built in 1936, primarily to serve as a secure storage facility for the United States gold reserves. Its strategic location in Kentucky was chosen for its defensibility and proximity to key transportation routes. The fort was constructed during a time of economic uncertainty and rising concerns about national security, particularly in the wake of the Great Depression. Today, it is also known for housing the U.S. Army Armor Center and School.
