In March 1867, American Secretary of State William H. Seward finalized a treaty with Russia (duly ratified by the Senate), which gave the Alaskan Territory to the US for 7.2 million dollars. It turned out to be about 2.5 cents an acre. That is how it became an American territory.
If you look up requirements for statehood, you will see how Alaska became a state. Not many people lived there, population is a requirement for statehood, until 1896 when gold was discovered. Finally, on January 3, 1959, Alaska became the 49th state.
