Deep split in culture, language and ethnicity. Turmoil in the East and growing resentment for West Pakistan as a result. Then came the elections: moral of the story.... logon ke mandat ka ehtaram karo.

Then came the Mukhti Bahini and Indian support, then came all out war, then Niazi decided to surrender instead of continue fighting.

Why did problems develop between West Pakistan and East Pakistan after the partition of British India?

The moslems thought that religion would be enough to keep the West and East Pakistan together. Initially, West Pakistan had the political power but when in the 1960s, a particular party in East Pakistan became the largest party in the Pakistani Parliament, the West Pakistan politicians for political/class reasons cracked down hard on East Pakistan. This caused millions of East Pakistanis to escape to India. India for political plus economic reasons, starting arming the East Pakistanis. India also then invaded East Pakistan. The end result was a humilitaing defeat for West Pakistan and this resulted in East Pakistan breaking away and becoming Bangladesh.

What was Bangladesh's original name after India got its independence from Britain?

It was called East Pakistan. When Indian was partitioned in 1947 the two predominantly Muslim regions became the country of Pakistan, which itself was in two parts - West and East Pakistan. Cultural differences and the wide distance between the two parts led to rising nationalism which resulted in East Pakistan fighting a war for independence during 1970-71. The Bangladeshi government in exile was declared in April 1971 and full independence was gained with the end of the war in December of that year.
