The invasions of the Aleutians were a diversion from the real invasion planned for Midway, but it was stopped. If not for the defeat at Midway, Japan might have been in a position to invade the continental US after invading the Hawaiian Islands and the rest of the Aleutian Islands first, but it never came to that.
