Carolina began as a proprietary colony, that is, one owned and operated by private individuals instead of the government. In the case of Carolina these were the eight "Lords Proprietors" who were given this massive land grant in 1663, for their assistance in restoring the monarchy after the Rule of Cromwell and the English Civil War, and their help in placing Charles II on the throne. They reciprocated by naming the capital city of their new colony Charles Town (now Charleston SC). The colony proved to be difficult to administer from England and made no money so the proprietors returned the grant to the crown and the Carolina's became Royal Colonies in 1729.
