A local constitution was approved by a Constitutional Convention on February 6, 1952, ratified by the U.S. Congress, approved by President Truman on July 3 of that year, and proclaimed by Gov. Muñoz Marín on July 25, 1952, the anniversary of the 1898 arrival of U.S. troops.

In the 2012 elections, Puerto Rico held a referendum where they were given the choice to keep their current status, become independent, or become a state. Puerto Rico voted to become a state, but it is now up to Congress to decide. It is likely that it will not pass, however.
