In 1168 AD/CE, the Fatamid Caliphate established Cairo as the capital of Egypt. Previously, the capital was Fustat but the Fatamids burned it to the ground to prevent the European crusaders from gaining control of it. It was then that they moved their administration to the, then, small town of Cairo.
