Originally, all of Arizona was area code 602. On March 19, 1995, area code 520 was created, serving not only Tucson but also everything outside the Phoenix metro area. In 1999, the remaining 602 area split in three (602, 480, and 623). On June 23, 2001, area code 928 was split off from 520; Tucson and the southernmost part of the state kept 520, while places like Yuma and Flagstaff changed to 928.
