It sank on the 7th December 1941
deep enough for ships to sink and go all the way under
Havana Harbor in Cuba.
The battleship USS Nevada was the only one to get up steam and sail towards the harbor's mouth. However, she was hit too many times and began to sink while under way; the battleship's commander ordered her beached so she would NOT sink and block the harbor's entrance.
None. The harbor in Pearl is to swallow for a ship to "sink" that is for the ship to go under water and out of sight. Two battleships were listed as "lost". They were the Oklahoma because she capsized. The other was the Arizona because of the massive explosion ripped the ship almost in two. The other 6 battleships were damaged, some heavily. But were back in service before the end of the war. The Nevada was hitting targets on D-day. Others were hitting targets in the pacific. Hope this helps!
They wanted to sink the 7th fleet in the harbor with a major attempt being the aircraft carriers. None of the carriers were in Pearl Harbor on the 7th. They did sink most of the battleships, all but one was returned to the service, but that took much time.
IJN & USN subs went looking for ships to sink.
To ground a ship means to steer it into water too shallow for it to float so that it gets stuck on the bottom. Normally you want to avoid this at all costs. In the case of the Nevada, when the attack started she tried to make a run for it and get out of the harbor. She didn't make it. She was torpedoed and began to sink. If she had sunk in the channel into the harbor she would have blocked it and it would have been months before she could be hauled off. The entire surviving fleet would have been stuck in Pearl Harbor during that entire time. So, the captain or the executive officer, whoever was in charge, deliberately grounded the ship to avoid blocking the harbor. Michael Montagne
It was a submarine!!!!!
Battleship USS Nevada was sunk twice; at Pearl Harbor she grounded herself, so she wouldn't sink in the channel, thus blocking it. After WW2, she was sunk as a gunnery target in the Pacific. Battleship USS Oklahoma was sunk at Pearl Harbor; sold for re-cycling (scrap), she sunk while under tow to California, half way out from Hawaii.
To purposely sink a ship is to 'scuttle' the ship.
Havana Harbor in Cuba.
To carry out the orders given to them by their commanders. US Commanders tried to destroy Japanese airplanes; Japanese Commanders tried to sink warships.
