The United States acquired the Aleutian Islands from Russia in 1867 as part of the purchase of Alaska. The deal, known as the Alaska Purchase, was negotiated by Secretary of State William H. Seward and resulted in the U.S. acquiring approximately 586,000 square miles of territory for $7.2 million.
