The "Bunkers" out there are gun batteries that were built starting in 1890 with the latest one being built in 1919 and some modified and expanded as late as the 1940's with the start of world war two. A few of the Batteries were closed and abandond only a few years after being built like battery Potter that was dismanteld after only 10 years of use or the old dynomite guns that lasted less than a decade, orther batteries like the guns at 9-gun were in use for as long as 40 years. However Fixed gun batteries and large artillery became obsolete at the end of world war two due to guided missiles, nuclear weapons, the obsolescene of large batlteships in favor of aircraft and long range bombers and the last of the Batteries or "Bunkers" had been adandond and dismantled after the end of WWII.
